Pace
Active

The rhythm that works: night one in Tangkou at the gate, first shuttle up at dawn, summit night for sunrise, then down to the villages. The mountain ticket re-enters freely for three days, so nothing on the mountain is ever a once-only gamble with the weather.

At a glance

  1. Day 1First shuttle to Yungu cableway → Begin-to-Believe Peak → Lion Peak → Beihai → sunset at Bright Summit
  2. Day 2Dawn at the viewpoint → West Sea Grand Canyon (or Tiandu with a slot) → Guest-Greeting Pine → Yuping cableway down → Tunxi Old Street
  3. Day 3Tangkou → Hongcun (morning) → Xidi (afternoon) → Huangshan North out
Day 1

Up the back side, into the postcard

First shuttle to Yungu cableway → Begin-to-Believe Peak → Lion Peak → Beihai → sunset at Bright Summit

Be at the Tangkou transfer centre for the first shuttle (about 6:00) and the Yungu cableway (¥80) opens the mountain to you queue-free. The back-peaks loop is the gentle introduction: Begin-to-Believe Peak's pine-framed views, the Flower-scattering Valley overlook, Lion Peak's monkey-watching-the-sea rock. Check into the summit hotel by mid-afternoon, rest, then walk out to Bright Summit for sunset as the day-trippers drain away. Dinner is the hotel canteen — prices are mountain-logic, so the shao-bing you carried up is tomorrow's breakfast hero.

Day 2

Sunrise, the canyon or the knife-edge, and down the front

Dawn at the viewpoint → West Sea Grand Canyon (or Tiandu with a slot) → Guest-Greeting Pine → Yuping cableway down → Tunxi Old Street

Out before dawn for the cloud sea — your hotel desk knows the sunrise time and the best nearby platform. The morning choice: the West Sea Grand Canyon loop (plank paths into the gorge, funicular back up, ¥100) or, with a reserved slot, the Tiandu Peak stair-ridge. Both are the kind of walking you'll describe for years. Then the classic descent: past the Flying-Over Rock to the Guest-Greeting Pine and down the Yuping cableway (¥90). Evening in Tunxi: stinky mandarin fish and hairy tofu on the Old Street — you've earned the fermentation dares.

Day 3

The merchant villages: water mirrors and clan halls

Tangkou → Hongcun (morning) → Xidi (afternoon) → Huangshan North out

Bus to Hongcun (¥23) and walk it before the groups: the Moon Pond at the village's heart, the South Lake causeway, the carved halls of the salt-merchant houses. Lunch on ham-and-bamboo in a courtyard restaurant, then the shuttle to Xidi (about ¥7) for the afternoon: the grand paifang gateway, stone-window carvings and flagstone lanes with a fraction of Hongcun's crowd. Tea on the Old Street if time allows, then Huangshan North for the evening train out — Hangzhou in 1.5 hours, Shanghai in 2.5.

Eat like you mean it

  • Stinky mandarin fish臭鳜鱼 — smells like a dare, eats like a reward.
  • Hairy tofuPan-fried moldy tofu, crisp outside custard inside — trust it.
  • Huizhou shao-bingThe summit ration: mustard-green pastries, buy a warm bag.
  • Stone-ear chicken soup石耳炖鸡 — the mountain's own tonic after the stairs.
  • Ham & bamboo shootsMerchant-banquet classic, order it in a village courtyard.

Where to stay

  • Tangkou (south gate)First-shuttle mornings and cheap beds — functional, not charming.
  • On the summitSunrise and empty evenings; basic rooms, book far ahead.
  • Tunxi (Old Street)Food and lantern-lit evenings; the right base for the village day.

Before you go

One honest thing — Three bookings decide everything: the mountain ticket (reservation-only, no on-site window), a summit bed for sunrise night, and Tiandu Peak's separate free slot if you want the knife-edge stairs. Book in that order.
