Two days in Guangzhou and one in Shenzhen, in that order, because the food is in the first and the airports are shared between them. The inter-city trains run every few minutes: Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North is about 29 minutes, and Guangzhou East to Shenzhen station around 56. Neither needs booking more than a day ahead.

Day 1
Morning tea, then the best building in the city
Yum cha → Chen Clan Academy → Shangxiajiu
Start with yum cha the way the city does — a pot of tea you top up yourself and a parade of small plates: har gow, siu mai, cheung fun. Go on a weekday before nine and give it two hours. Chen Clan Academy is the best building in Guangzhou and the one that needs planning: closed Tuesdays, ¥10, booked ahead through the museum’s WeChat account, and entry is by scanning the code at the door. Shangxiajiu in Xiguan is arcaded qilou shopfronts and the old tea houses, and parts of it have been under restoration for years.
Day 2
A leased island, a free park, and the river after dark
Shamian Island → Yuexiu Park → Pearl River cruise
Shamian is a sandbank leased to Britain and France in the 1860s, now a few streets of old consulates and banks under big banyans, closed to through traffic, free, and half an hour end to end unless you stop. Yuexiu Park is free and open from six in the morning: banyans, three lakes, the Five Rams statue that is the city’s emblem, and the Ming-dynasty Zhenhai Tower inside it. After dark, the Pearl River cruise is about an hour from roughly ¥78, sailing from Dashatou every ten to thirty minutes between six and half past ten.
Day 3
Across to Shenzhen, and a factory that survived
Train to Shenzhen → OCT-LOFT → Lianhuashan Park
About half an hour from Guangzhou. OCT-LOFT is a 1980s factory quarter that was kept and reused instead of knocked down — OCAT’s contemporary art galleries, bookshops, design studios and coffee across 150,000 square metres, and the streets are the point of it. Lianhuashan Park is 150 hectares with a hill in the middle, free, and where the postcard skyline gets photographed: from the top you look straight down the Futian axis, and on a clear evening the sun goes down over Shenzhen Bay behind it.
Eat like you mean it

- White-cut chicken and Cantonese roast meatsPoached, cooled, chopped on the bone, served cold with ginger and spring onion in oil. Roast goose and char siu hang in the window and are chopped to order.
- Sampan congee and double-skin milkCongee with fish, peanuts and jellyfish, stirred through at the last minute. Double-skin milk is set buffalo milk with a second skin folded under.
- Chaoshan beef hotpotA Shenzhen speciality: clear beef broth and hand-cut beef sorted by which part of the animal it came from, each with its own dipping time.
Where to stay
- Guangzhou: Yuexiu or LiwanYou want morning tea and the old streets within walking distance, and the metro under them.
- Guangzhou: TianheModern, closer to the East station, and convenient for the run to Shenzhen.
- Shenzhen: FutianNear the Civic Center axis and Lianhuashan Park, and minutes from the Hong Kong checkpoints.
Before you go
- Chen Clan Academy is closed Tuesdays and is booked through the museum’s WeChat account — there is no ticket window to queue at.
- Summer is muggy and rainy here; October to December and March to April are the comfortable months.
- Weekday morning tea before nine is a different meal from the weekend one — go early and give it two hours.
- The Futian and Luohu checkpoints put you into Hong Kong in minutes, which is why Shenzhen works as a gateway either way.
- Dameisha beach needs a free advance booking through the summer season and at weekends.
One honest thing — Chen Clan Academy is closed on Tuesdays and is booked ahead through the museum’s WeChat account rather than at a window — there is no queue to join, only a scan at the door. Summer here is muggy and rainy; the comfortable months are October to December and March to April. Two gaps worth naming: Nantou Ancient City, the old walled town that most Shenzhen itineraries include, and the Shenzhen Museum, have no entries on this site yet.
