Zhengzhou splits cleanly by zone: the ancient core in the city on day one, the sacred mountain and its temple on day two. Breakfast is not a detail here — hulatang before 08:30 is part of the itinerary. If you have a third day, give it entirely to 只有河南; squeezing it into a half-day is the classic mistake.
At a glance
- Day 1方中山 hulatang → Henan Museum → Shang City wall → Erqi Tower & 德化街
- Day 2Coach to Dengfeng → Shaolin Temple → Pagoda Forest → Sanhuangzhai (clear days) → back by dusk
Day 1
Five thousand years before lunch, the tower after dark
方中山 hulatang → Henan Museum → Shang City wall → Erqi Tower & 德化街
Start in the 方中山 queue by 08:00 — hulatang with fried dough for dipping is the city's morning ritual. Walk it off to the Henan Museum (reserved slot, three hours: the bone flute, the Fu Hao owl zun, Wu Zetian's gold edict — closed Mondays). After lunch, the Shang City wall: a 3,600-year-old rammed-earth rampart running through the modern blocks, free, with the site museum beside it. Evening belongs to Erqi Square — climb the tower (¥10) before it closes, watch the Friday/Saturday 20:00 light show if the day fits, then dinner on the 德化街 food streets: huimian at 合记 if you have one bowl left in you.
Day 2
Shaolin: the temple, the pagodas and the cliff path
Coach to Dengfeng → Shaolin Temple → Pagoda Forest → Sanhuangzhai (clear days) → back by dusk
Coach from the central station by 08:00 (¥28, 90 minutes) to beat the crowds to the temple gate. The ¥80 ticket covers the halls, the Pagoda Forest and the kung fu shows — catch the morning performance first, then walk the temple with the tour groups still behind you. On a clear day, take the cableway up to Sanhuangzhai and walk the cliff galleries as far as your legs agree; otherwise the Songyang Academy at the mountain's foot is the gentler afternoon. Ignore every 'official guide' at the gate. Last bus or a Didi back — dinner is 葛记焖饼 and bed.
Eat like you mean it
- Huimian合记's lamb-broth bowl — order the small, not the large.
- Hulatang方中山 before 08:30; pepper soup with dough for dipping.
- Ge's braised pancake葛记焖饼 with 坛子肉 — the quiet classic.
- Cai's steamed dumplings蔡记蒸饺 — thin skins, bamboo steamer, free soup.
- Yellow River carpOne proper 豫菜 dinner: the whole braised river fish.
Where to stay
- Erqi Square & the old centreBreakfast, the tower and both metro lines on foot — the food-first base.
- Zhengdong New DistrictEast Station access and quiet modern nights; right side for Zhongmu.
- Jinshui (near the museum)Local restaurants everywhere and the museum around the corner.
Before you go
- Book the Henan Museum slot two to three days ahead for weekends (official WeChat account); it closes on Mondays.
- Shaolin: leave by 08:00, watch the morning kung fu show first, and ignore every 'official guide' at the gate — everything you need is inside the ¥80 ticket.
- 只有河南 needs a full day and a booked ticket; do not try to bolt it onto the Shaolin day.
- Zhengzhou East (high-speed) and Zhengzhou (central) are different stations 10 metro stops apart — check the characters on your ticket.
- The far sights run on light, not distance: Yellow River park for sunset, Songshan for clear mornings, Zhongmu before the last shuttle.
One honest thing — Book before you travel: the Henan Museum is free but reservation-only (weekend slots go two to three days out), and 只有河南 sells out weekends. Shaolin wants an early bus — the morning kung fu show is the one to catch.
