Guangzhou rewards the traveller who reads the opening hours before the map. Nothing here is far — the metro reaches all of it — but two of the best things in the city keep opposite days off, and arriving without checking them is the one mistake this plan is built to avoid. The days themselves are simple: the old city west of the river first, the park and the river front second, and something to eat at every gap in between.

Day 1
Morning tea, then the academy and the old foreign quarter
Yum cha → Chen Clan Academy → Shamian Island → Yongqingfang or Beijing Road
Start with morning tea — it runs from around seven, and on a weekday before nine you get a table without a wait. Taotaoju and Panxi still push trolleys; the tea-seat charge is about ¥8 a head and printed on the menu, and everyone around you will give it ninety minutes, so give it ninety minutes. The Chen Clan Academy afterwards is ¥10, booked ahead through the museum's WeChat account and entered by scanning what you booked with, so carry your passport. Shamian Island after lunch is free and half an hour end to end unless you stop for coffee, which most people do. In the evening choose Yongqingfang over Shangxiajiu: the two are minutes apart, and parts of the shopping street have been under restoration for years while the lanes behind it — Enning Road, the opera museum, Bruce Lee's ancestral house — have not.
Day 2
A park with the city's history in it, and the river after dark

Yuexiu Park opens at six in the morning and is free, and the Zhenhai Tower inside it holds the Guangzhou Museum — ¥10, closed Mondays, which is the opposite of the Chen Clan Academy and the reason the days of this trip can be swapped but not ignored. Line 2 to Yuexiu Park. Spend the evening east of the river: the Canton Tower sells decks from ¥150 enclosed at 433 metres up to ¥328 for the open platform at 488, stays open until 22:30, is better after dark than before it, and sells every ticket under your own name. The cruise is the same view from the water — about an hour, from around ¥78, with Dashatou sailing from six until half past ten. Take a boat that leaves well after the banks are lit; the earliest sailings are the ones people come back from disappointed.
Eat like you mean it

- Sampan congeeWu Zhan Ji · Panxi. Fish, peanuts, jellyfish and fried noodle threads stirred in at the last minute.
- Double-skin milkNanxin · Renxin Laopu. Set buffalo milk with a skin on top and a second one folded underneath.
- Dessert soupsBaihua Dessert · Nanxin. ¥15–25 a bowl at the old shops, and eaten after dinner rather than with it.
Where to stay
- Liwan · ShangxiajiuThe cheapest of the four and the best for breakfast. Older buildings, and street noise until late.
- Yuexiu · Beijing RoadThe historic centre, walkable to most of day one, sitting on lines 1 and 2.
- Zhujiang New Town · TianheTowers and the river view — and the furthest of the four from the old streets. ¥500–2,000 a night.
- PazhouFor the Canton Fair only; quiet and short on street life the rest of the year.
Before you go
- Read the closing days before the map. The Chen Clan Academy shuts on Tuesdays and the Zhenhai Tower museum on Mondays, they sit on different days of this plan, and a trip that starts on a Tuesday simply runs in reverse. Nothing else here needs booking weeks ahead.
- Carry the passport everywhere. The academy entry, the tower decks and the cruise berths are all booked or scanned under your own name.
- Do not book the earliest cruise. Both banks are lit only after dark, and the six o'clock boat is the one people come back from disappointed.
- Give Shangxiajiu a miss and spend the time in Yongqingfang instead — the shopping street has been half under restoration for years, the lanes behind it have not.
- No metro card needed: the transport QR comes out of Alipay, and the APM under Zhujiang New Town is a flat ¥2 charged separately from the rest of the network.
- Two things fill the hotels for a fortnight at a time — the Canton Fair in mid-April and mid-October, and typhoons from July to September that can shut the river cruises for a day.
One honest thing — Both ticketed sights on this plan close one day a week, on different days: the Chen Clan Academy on Tuesdays, the Zhenhai Tower museum on Mondays. Land on a Tuesday and the days simply run in reverse — park and river first, academy second. That is the whole trick; nothing else here needs booking weeks ahead.
