Datong in 2 days and 1 night, the Northern Wei capital

Budget
¥¥ · mid
Best season
May–Oct
Transport
HSR + charter car
Pace
Steady

Datong splits by direction: the grottoes and the walled town on day one, the cliff country southeast on day two. The rhythm that works is early starts — Yungang at opening, the Hanging Temple before the queue — with the old town's food and lit-up wall as the evening reward.

At a glance

  1. Day 1Yungang Grottoes → 东方削面 → Huayan Temple → Shanhua Temple → Nine-Dragon Wall → the wall at dusk
  2. Day 2Charter car → Hanging Temple (climb with reservation) → 浑源凉粉 → Yingxian Wooden Pagoda → back by dusk
Day 1

The caves at dawn, the old town at dusk

Yungang Grottoes → 东方削面 → Huayan Temple → Shanhua Temple → Nine-Dragon Wall → the wall at dusk

Bus 3 or a ¥50 taxi to Yungang for the 7:30 opening: Cave 20's giant Buddha in morning light, the painted twin Caves 5–6, then back through the museum hall as the crowds arrive. Lunch back in town on knife-cut noodles at 东方削面. The afternoon is one walking loop inside the wall: Huayan Temple's giant Liao hall and smiling bodhisattva, Shanhua's Jin-dynasty timberwork (free), the glazed dragons of the Nine-Dragon Wall. Finish on the wall itself as the gates light up — rent a bike (¥30/hr) if the legs allow, then dinner on flower-shaped shaomai at 凤临阁.

Day 2

The hanging monastery and the wooden giant

Charter car → Hanging Temple (climb with reservation) → 浑源凉粉 → Yingxian Wooden Pagoda → back by dusk

Leave by 07:30 with a charter car (¥400–600/day, any hotel desk arranges one). At the Hanging Temple, your reserved climb slot (¥100) takes you up the one-way plank route through the three-faith halls; the view from below (¥15) is the fallback and nearly as good. Lunch in Hunyuan town on cold liangfen noodles at 小媳妇. The afternoon run west to Ying county is the quiet masterpiece: the 1056 Wooden Pagoda, 67 metres of nail-free joinery leaning gently into its tenth century. Back in Datong for the train or one more night.

Before you go

One honest thing — One reservation decides this trip: climbing the Hanging Temple (¥100) is real-name, 7-day-release, no on-site sale. Book it the moment your dates are set, and book Yungang (15-day release) while you are at it.
